LifeChange - Program Levels

Level I – A Fresh Start
During this orientation time, LifeChange staff’s main purpose is to assure participants of their emotional and physical safety within the program, and communicate program structure, purpose and expectations. During Level I, participants will:

  • Move into The Scott Street House, meet house parents and begin chores and home life.

  • Meet with the Program Director to:

    • Review house rules, weekly schedule, communication and transportation.

    • Discuss foundational spiritual beliefs, how they work in relationships and the program, and how all components of LifeChange and staff work together.

    • Discuss why they are here and define individual counseling strategy, purpose and goals.

  • If applicable, discuss individual academic plan, curriculum, and structure of school, classroom rules and expectation for completing course work. Begin first classes.

  • Begin to get to know housemates and peers in the program.

Level II – Course Adjustments
Level II’s focus is identifying and taking responsibility for destructive behaviors and thought patterns, working through spiritual decisions and personal needs. During Level II, participants will:

  • Identify emotional, social, mental, spiritual and behavioral problems.

  • Formulate a list of identified problems, issues, losses, and negative behaviors in hopes of providing emotional and physical safety and personal accountability.

  • Grow in understanding of past negative behavior, the implications of continuing such behavior, reasons behind choosing these behaviors and alternative healthy behaviors to use in the future.

  • Be given opportunities to learn to use alternate means of expression as needed, i.e. art, poems, music, animals.

  • Demonstrate respect towards staff, others, and property on a daily basis.

  • Begin building trusting relationships with staff and peers.

  • Begin to accept diversity of people in house and be a part of building community in the house.

  • Continue learning how to be a functioning participant in the house. Take responsibility for personal chores and tasks.

  • Follow guidelines and rules consistently.

  • Demonstrate an ability to function in the school setting (if applicable) and compliance with expectations.

  • Personal hygiene and social skills are being demonstrated and developed as necessary.

Level III – A New Direction
Throughout Level III, participants make recognizable progress in meeting their personal goals, in desiring truth and honesty in their relationships and demonstrating respect for authority. During Level III, participants will:

  • Continue to develop new positive attitudes and behaviors. Begin to recognize that that real and authentic change can be difficult, but is possible through a relationship with God.

  • Demonstrate more mature levels of emotional functioning and insight.

  • Demonstrate a positive attitude and behavior towards chores, work projects, and other responsibilities, evidenced in self‐motivation and taking initiative to fulfill responsibilities.

  • Begin to identify family issues and work on relationships with parents. Use telephone time and letters to build more respectful, honest and meaningful communication with family.

  • Continue learning to identify and then beginning to resolve problems as they arrive, handling conflict appropriately and constructively.

  • Begin to allow destructive behavior patterns and attitudes to be broken by openness to discuss with staff and receive redirection.

  • Learn to handle stress in a positive manner and take measures to eliminate its buildup.

  • Have a healthy understanding of consequences for inappropriate behavior.

  • Display honesty in admitting when wrongdoing is taking place.

  • Assume personal responsibility for academics.

  • Begin to develop a greater value for self, developing confidence in personal strengths, beliefs, and decisions.

Level IV – Consistent Progress
Entering Level IV, participants show forward-motion in their decision making, their spiritual life and thought life. Consistent positive behaviors and attitudes are demonstrated in everyday situations as well as stressful times. During Level IV, participants will:

  • Demonstrate more consistency in encouraging and motivating others through words and example.

  • Take responsibility for own actions, choices, thoughts, words, and consequences. Be responsible to set goals and plans or steps to achieve desired outcomes.

  • Experience new attitudes and behaviors becoming a spontaneous and more natural part of everyday life, rather than being so consciously generated or forced through struggle.

  • Learn how to cultivate and build upon strengths. Acknowledge weaknesses and challenges that might need responsible personal boundaries or support. Continue to be real about needs and growth.

  • Begin to consider some next steps in their life (going home, going to college, etc.), determining pros and cons for each, and a success strategy for each environment.

Level V – LifeChange Transition
At the completion of the LifeChange level system, participants are ready to transition home or to their next setting with attained emotional growth. There will likely be a need for support systems in home and their community. During Level V:

  • The decision has been made by parents and LifeChange that it is time to go home/exit the program.

  • The Program Director, parents, and child have discussed a success strategy.

  • Academic transcript and withdrawal is completed.

  • Transfer of daily authority from LifeChange to parents occurs.

  • Transportation and moving logistics are arranged.

  • The Program Director will follow up with the family and participant within 7 to 10 days following discharge, and will check in monthly for 2 months. Family and participants should make their own initiatives for any circumstances or situations that arise where the relationship with LifeChange would be valuable to assist with any needs.
